The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance was delighted, and more than excited, to recently welcome the incredibly talented trio of Marco Mendoza, Tommy Aldridge, and Soren Anderson to its premises. There are stars and then there are legends… Both Tommy Aldrige and Marco Mendoza are the latter, and when they and guitarist Soren Anderson, call up and say ‘we’re in town on Wednesday, can we come and talk to your students?’ you don’t say no!

Tommy is a veteran heavy metal and hard rock drummer who has pioneered double bass drumming. His C.V. reads like a guest list into the most exclusive night club, and includes such huge names as Ozzy Osbourne, Thin Lizzy and Whitesnake. Combine Tommy’s obvious mastery of the kit with his natural charisma and showmanship and you understand why his clinics are best described as ‘simply awesome’!

Marco is an extremely versatile and gifted musician who commands the highest respect from the bass community. His forte is definitely within the Rock genre, as his playing credits with Whitesnake, Thin Lizzy and Ted Nugent indicate, but he is a far more versatile musician than that. For example, when he’s not touring he can often be found playing local LA jazz clubs with Joey Heredia and Renato Neto!

The event, which lasted two hours, was a huge, rip-roaring success and ended with everyone on their feet, every face with a smile, and every hand clapping with excitement, wanting more!

ICMP student Hans Menacho attended the event and raved: “The performance was powerful and energetic, with that extra touch of finesse which only experienced players can provide. The songs played were mostly from Mendoza’s solo work, with some covers. It was particularly amazing how Tommy Aldridge, who is in his 50’s, can rock more than any other drummer in his or her twenties.” Read more...
