     Gary Powell drumming

After hearing so much about both the Libertines and their drummer Gary Powell I was really excited about getting the chance to be able to see him perform in an Institute masterclass.

As I had anticipated, the masterclass was both informative and unique as Gary gave us a view of his distinctive drumming style. We were treated to a display of his practice methods and his views on independence; however the section which I found particularly interesting was his six stroke phrasing around the kit. What particularly stood out to me was Gary's groove and how solid he was around his solos and his sense of timing was also very impressive.

As well as performing Gary also gave us an insight into his musical career, explaining where he learned to play the drums, how he came to be part of the Libertines alongside Pete Doherty and Carl Barat and he also told us about his first ever Libertines gig playing on a nightmare 'jungle' kit which had the cymbals held in place with string!

Gary's current kit is a little more advanced and was very indicative of his style, he had a variety of sounds around the kit and he played with great vigour. It was a good experience for me and my friends and I'd like to thank the Institute for the opportunity to see Gary Powell and I wish him all the best in the future.
