The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance prides itself on offering its students exclusive access to the best clinicians and masterclasses, and Sebastiaan De Krom was recently a welcome addition to the illustrious list of visitors.
Whilst perhaps best known for being the drummer in Jamie Cullum’s band, Seb is a jazz drummer of international standing and maintains a hectic touring and recording schedule. Having studied in America for five years with legends such as Dave Holland, he is not only a fantastic player but has a deep knowledge and understanding of jazz. This, when combined with his relaxed and informal delivery, means that he can communicate complex topics in an approachable way resulting in an informal but highly educational event.
Seb was joined on stage by his trio who helped him demonstrate and discuss the intricacies of the jazz idiom and enabled the students hear concepts in practice. Bass duties were handled by Sam Burgess, bassist for the house band at Ronnie Scott’s (and also an alumni of the Institute!) whilst Steve Kaldestad played sax. Needless to say, they performed brilliantly and gave some amazing demonstrations of great playing!
