Key Points:

The Institute degree programme is the UK's pre-eminent BMus degree course for singers ands vocalists wishing to reach professional standards of musicianship and build sustainable careers in the music industry.

  • Conservatoire-style education for the contemporary vocalist
  • Considerably more contact teaching hours than many popular music degrees
  • Unique Licentiate as an option in the third year offering experience of teacher training
  • Challenges students to achieve professional levels of musicianship and instrumental skill
  • Develops transferable and industry skills to prepare graduates for he real world
  • Delivered by the UK's leading teaching faculty, with unrivalled professional credentials

This dynamic, relevant and challenging programme combines the development of professional singing and musicianship skills with the provision of the tools and knowledge required to develop and sustain a career in the modern music industry. The course offers a 'conservatoire style' approach for the contemporary vocalist and delivers high musical standards.

It is mainly delivered through practice and performance based modules (approximately 75% of the activities) and provides a unique practice-theory divide. This enables students to develop skills in music practice, performance, and production, resulting in a high level of competence and literacy with the language of popular music.

Students follow a core programme throughout the first two years, developing their music skills in performance, theory and practice, technology, stylistic awareness, collaboration, popular music history, songwriting, arranging and composition, percussion and backing vocals. This skill development is augmented in the second year by modules which examine the business and economic aspects of the music industry.

The third year provides the opportunity to study practical music skills to an advanced level, both in individual and ensemble 'real world' performance situations. Project options within the third year of the programme offer numerous opportunities for the construction of individual leaning routes so that students can develop more specialist skills in their chosen area of music study (e.g. production project, event management).

Significantly, students enrolled on this programme receive considerably more contact teaching hours at every level than similar UK courses. Students also have the opportunity to achieve teacher training experience by opting to take the Licentiate option during the third year of study. This unique and innovative element of the programme means that the successful graduate is provided with an immediate pathway into teaching.
