Alexander Technique
Have you ever wondered how the musicians you most admire seem to play with so little effort? It's probably because they are using less effort! They're doing less to achieve more. It sounds simple but it's not so easy to achieve when you actually try.

The whole idea behind the Alexander Technique is to do less, it helps you to recognise and then let go of your excess tensions; it helps you to stop making too much effort when doing things, including playing your guitar, bass, drums or if you're a vocalist, using your voice. |
|
It's hard to be aware of the habits you have, especially as they relate to playing, because your habits are part of you, and they're part of the way you express yourself when you play. By learning to be more aware, the Alexander Technique teaches you how to let go of habits. This can have a beneficial effect on your playing not to mention your general health. |

The Alexander Technique can help with specific problems such as RSI, tendonitis or tennis elbow. It's also ideal in helping to prevent problems occurring in the first place and will also improve your posture, which in turn can improve your practice and performance. We don't want you to wait to be struck down by a playing-related injury, start NOW to prevent it from happening to you!

Quote from Me'esha Bryan, Institute vocal tutor:
"I used to have terrible lower back pain from the curvature of my spine but after having a few lessons with Jane and committing myself to doing 15 minutes in the semi-supine position everyday, I feel so much better within myself. The curve is reducing every day, I have no more pain, I feel fitter, lighter on my feet and people have even commented on how well I look. As a vocalist, I'm quite a visual person. Singing is so much about knowing how every inch of your body feels whilst performing and the Alexander Technique really helps to reinforce this. Simply by thinking, you can break bad habits, not by forcing your muscles to perform tasks, but by releasing and letting your body work alongside the natural forces that surround us.
Alexander Technique is great! I really look forward to my lessons, not just because Jane is LOVELY but because I will leave after the hour having learnt something that will benefit me for years to come."
